When your boyfriend says he needs some space and you had no idea that he was unhappy with the relationship, your first instinct is to ask him why. You want to sit down and talk about it and solve everything then and there and go on with your relationship. That is unlikely to happen. When a man says he needs space, he is really saying that he wants to get away from you and not sit down calmly and talk. When he will not talk, you begin crying and pleading for him to tell you what is wrong, but he just wants to get away. Instead of crying and pleading with him, your best chance of getting your ex back is to make him regret his actions.
He said he wanted space so give him all of the space he needs, but first put a smile on your face and agree. Tell him he is not the only one that has been needing space, you have been thinking of telling him the same thing for some time. Then if he has any things at your place, help him get them together and shoo him out the door. From that point on, you need to focus on your life and have no contact with him at all.
At this point you have done everything you can do to get your ex back, the rest will be up to him. Right now, he is probably wondering what happened. Why does he feel as if he is the one that was dumped, when it was him breaking up with you. Now, instead of you wondering what you did to make him unhappy, it will be him wondering why you seemed so glad to get rid of him. The more he thinks of it, the more confused he will be. Since men cannot stand rejection, this will eat on him and he will be the one losing sleep.
Soon he will come to realize that he threw away the best thing that ever happened to him and the sense of loss will drive him to want you back. You should be starting to hear about him asking friends what is going on in your life and then he will probably call you. Let his calls pile up for a few days. When you call him back, treat him like an old friend and tell him it is good to hear from him again. Let him do the talking, but do not give in and tell him you love him. Make him pursue you again, as he did when you first met. You want to make sure that he never feels he needs space again.
